MORAVIA — A Waterloo man sustained a gun shot wound while deer hunting six miles southwest of Moravia Sunday, according to a press release issued by the Iowa Department of Natural Resources Sunday evening.
Thomas S. Burns, 38, was shot after one of the other 21 hunters in his party shot at a running deer. The accident occured around 10 a.m. Sunday.
Burns was later airlifted to Mercy Medical Center in Des Moines. The Iowa DNR press release listed Burns as being in stable condition.
The group of hunters were hunting at the Prairie Ridge area on Rathbun Lake.
Assisting the Iowa DNR at the scene was the Appanoose County Sheriff's Office and the Iowa State Patrol.
The Iowa DNR says a total of three people were shot over the weekend around the state while hunting. A Grinnell man shot himself in a foot during a hunt in Page County on Saturday. His gun fired after it got tangled in some bags he was carrying.
An Altoona man was injured in Lucas County after he was shot when a deer ran between him and other people in his hunting group.
