CENTERVILLE —
A nation-wide Stand Up For Religious Freedom rally event will have a presence in Centerville on Saturday, Oct. 20 starting at 12 p.m. at the bandshell on the Appanoose County Courthouse lawn.
The Centerville rally is organized by Sandra Beale, who addressed the Centerville City Council Monday, Oct. 1. She announced the rally and asked if the council would support the rally or be involved.
Beale said the rally is a way to stand up for liberty, to speak or worship as you see fit and is a calling for all religious faiths and political parties.
Beale said the Health and Human Services' health care mandate infringes on the first amendment freedom of religion and religious conscious and if you want to preserve these you should attend the rally.
"And that's what we're standing up for is God's law and our first amendment freedom, which is granted under the Constitution," Beale said.
Local citizens, guest speaker, Cindy Dirkson, the state director for American Catholics for Religious Freedom, and religious leaders are expected to be there and speak out against President Barack Obama's HHS mandate.
"The HHS mandate forces all employers — including religious schools and hospitals — to provide free contraceptives, surgical sterilizations and abortion-inducing drugs through their health plans, regardless of religious or moral convictions," states a press release announcing the Centerville rally. "If the federal government can force employers to choose between violating their deeply held religious and moral convictions or going out of business, then the founding American principle of religious freedom has been forfeited."
According to Stand Up For Religious Freedom literature, 126 cities in 41 states have signed up to hold a rally including Centerville, Davenport, Des Moines and Fairfield. More information can be found at standuprally.com.
