CENTERVILLE —
Centerville is now in its fifth year of transporting animals picked up in the city and not claimed to animal shelters in Des Moines and Ottumwa, said animal control officer Tom Beck.
"In the first two years, Barbara Hurst donated her time and vehicle to take animals to the Animal Rescue League in Des Moines," Beck said. "Now, in order to take an animal to the ARL or to the Heartland Humane Society in Ottumwa, it costs $25 per animal and all donated money goes toward the shelter fee. Deloris Beck now transports the animals in a vehicle provided by the city."
Beck said 103 animals were delivered to the ARL in 2007, 107 animals were taken in 2008 and in 2009, 73 animals were taken to the ARL in Des Moines and 30 were taken to the HHS. HHS is a no-kill and the ARL in Des Moines is a low-kill. 2010 was the first year that we’ve been able to get more animals in the no-kill facility.
"Hy-Vee donates all of their broken bags of feed and this enables us to hold the animals longer until we can transport them." Beck said. "The city would like to acknowledge Hy-Vee for its contributions and thank them for their help."
But the city is in need of financial contributions.
"Our funds are currently down to about $200. As you can see by the numbers stated above, we typically use a little more than $2,500 per year paying fees to shelters that will take these animals and find them good homes," Beck said. "Without donations, the city cannot transport and the alternative is euthanization. No one likes that alternative. It is also the city’s intent, when given a choice, to take as many animals as possible to the no-kill facility."
Beck said donations can be sent to Centerville City Hall, 312 E. Maple, Centerville, Iowa 52544, Attn: Animal Control. Or donations can be brought to City Hall Monday through Friday from 8 a.m.-5 p.m. If you know of a group that would like to have a fundraiser for this cause, contact City Hall at 437-4339.
