CITY COUNCIL PREVIEW: Safe Routes to School project on council agenda

CENTERVILLE — The agenda for tonight's Centerville City Council meeting at 5:30 p.m. at City Hall has three discussion items: Safe Routes to School project status; brush dump designation; and a controlled bow deer hunt harvest later this year.

What might happen with the Safe Routes to School sidewalk project was talked about in a story published in the Daily Iowegian on Thursday, Aug. 2.

Options for the City Council, according to a city official, is to try and raise the money to finish the project or forfeit the more than $249,000 grant the city received and remit it back to the state.

If the city decides to pursue the project, based on the low bid the city received and rejected in 2011, more than  $75,000 would have to be raised.

If the city decides to remit the grant back to the state, more than $20,000 paid out in engineering fees would have to be made up.

In an email sent from Nancy J. Huisman, with Hall Engineering, to Kathy Ridnour, with the Iowa DOT on Aug. 3, a proposal to change the original scope of the project is offered. Omit the Francis Avenue to Cottage Street sidewalk segment on the west side of South Main Street from the project and, if permitted, install new sidewalk on the west side of South Main Street from Terry Street to Wall Street and from Grand Street to Liberty Street.

The Daily Iowegian wants to hear from you about the Safe Routes to School project. Go to www.dailyiowegian.com and on the right hand side answer the poll question, "Should the Centerville City Council try to raise the additional money needed to build the Safe Routes to School sidewalk project or return the more than $249,000 DOT grant back to the state?"

The bow deer hunt harvest inside the city limits was very controversial when it was approved for the first time  in Centerville for the 2011-2012 deer season.

In other action, Centerville Mayor Jim Senior has nominated Nancy Huisman, of Centerville, as the "Citizen of the Month" for July 2012.

"I don't have the room on this sheet to list all of the things this young lady does and has done for the city of Centerville and Appanoose County," Senior wrote in his nomination letter. "If we had a dozen like her our problems would be few."

The council will consider a resolution to approve the sale of the former water department office at 112 N. 12th St. to Sales and Associates, Inc.

The council will consider a resolution accepting the final completion of the storm sewer improvements-2011 project. The project cost was $637,849.81 and was substantially completed on July 18, 2012 and now the contractor, Pilcher Enterprise, Inc., is required to provide Centerville with a release of liens.
