CENTERVILLE —
Mayor Jim Senior delivered Meals on Wheels Tuesday, March 19 as part of the “Mayors For Meals Day.” He along with two volunteers from St. Mary’s Catholic Church, Tara Koestner and Kristen Sheston, took time out of their busy day to help deliver Meals on Wheels to many seniors in the Centerville area.
“Mayors For Meals Day” held annually, is an event to show support for the Meals on Wheels program and the seniors of our community. The Meals on Wheels program began in 1967, providing noon meals to many individuals who are ill or homebound, and would not be provided a meal otherwise. Well balanced and nutritious meals are prepared by Mercy Medical Center Centerville and delivered promptly to people’s homes each day. Meals on Wheels, at one time, were delivered completely by volunteer organizations and church groups.
“We are very thankful for the help and generosity of the volunteers who do fill in on an as needed basis, and for the churches who volunteer to take an entire month or a few weeks. We still need more individuals and organizations who would be willing to help on an as needed basis, or try to cover a week or two. Many of the individuals that receive meals do not have the opportunity to leave their homes often, and are excited to have the opportunity to visit with our delivery people,” said Kris Laurson of Appanoose Community Care Services.
