CENTERVILLE —
Police chief Tom Demry said Monday evening via text message that some .22-caliber bullets were found in the back parking lot at Lakeview Elementary, but no gun was located.
Demry says a student found a .22 caliber bullet in the back parking lot and brought it home. The child's parents eventually discovered the bullet and notified the Centerville Police Department. An officer retrieved the bullet the child had found and also located others in the back parking lot at Lakeview.
Demry said the bullets appears to have been there for a while and nothing appears suspicious about the bullets at this time.
According to Centerville Schools Superintendent Tony Ryan, a letter was sent home with Lakeview students Tuesday to reassure parents about the situation.
In part the letter stated, “Later in the school day on January 7, 2013 some loose and stray ammunition shells were found in the Lakeview parking lot. The ammunition shells appeared to have been on the ground of the parking lot for a period of time, by the identified fatigue and wear. There was no gun identified or found on school premises.”
“...We ask that parents and community members continue to be partners with the school district in ensuring a safe environment for our students and staff. We invite parents and community members to call a school administrator’s office if he or she identifies something out of the ordinary or unusual around any of the district’s school buildings so school administration may investigate the situation.”
