CENTERVILLE —
The Rathbun Bird Club held its annual Christmas bird count and recorded 85 species, a new high for our count.
The club put 14 observers in the field and had 10 feeder counters. The weather during the day was mostly rain, drizzle and some fog.
Some of the better birds found were four Eared Grebe, one Northern Goshawk, two Snow Bunting, three Pine Siskin, one Yellow-Bellied Sapsucker, two Hermit Thrush, two Horned Grebe, 85 Pelicans, two Green-Winged Teal, six Canvasback, one Coot, five Killdeers, 13 Bob White, three Yellow-Rumped Warbler, two Northern Shrike, 20 Bonaparte's Gull, 17 Redhead and one Swamp Sparrow.
During the count 18 species of water fowl found included one American Wigeon, two Ruddy Ducks, 90 Ring-Necked, seven Pied-Billed Grebe, seven Cormorant, 10 Gr. Blue Heron and six Killdeer.
Gallinaceous birds were one pheasant and 38 turkeys.
Hawks recorded were 40 Red-Tailed Hawks, two Kestrel, two Merlins, four Northern Harrier and 108 Bald Eagles.
Perching birds were Rock Pigeon, 14 Eurasian Collard Dove, Morning Dove, Red-Headed, Red-Bellied, Downy, Harty, Northern Flicker and one Pileated Woodpecker.
Also found were Blue Jays, Chickadees, Crows, Titmice, White-Breasted Nuthatch, Brown Creeper, American Robin, Carolina Wren, two Golden-Crowned Kinglet and 101 Eastern Bluebird.
Seed eating birds were Tree, Song, White-throated, Harris, White-Crowned Sparrows, Dark-Eyed Dunco and Northern Cardinal.
There were also 18 Red-Winged Blackbird, Common Grackle, 100 Cowbirds, Purple Finch, House Finch and Gold Finch.
Notable misses were Rough-Legged Hawk, Meadowlark, Northern Shoveler, Northern Pintail and Red-Breasted Nuthatch.
Count participants were Tom, Andrew and Breck Johnson, Ray Cummins, Larry Piatt, Leo Schlunz, Dan Tiemeier, Paul and Deb Egeland, Eugene and Eloise Armstrong, Cydney Hillyard, Vicky and Mike Stephens.
Feeder counters were Virginia Koestner, Virginia Padovan, Joe and Mary Murphy, Becky and Tiffany Johnson, Mark and Deb Peterson, Nancy Clum and Cheryl Piatt.
