CENTERVILLE —
A native son will be returning home to perform at The Spur on Saturday, Nov. 3.
Mike Proffitt, now living in Des Moines is originally from Numa, and has been a professional musician for 40 years. He left home in the 1970s to pursue music and toured with the band Heires and Proffitt all over the country.
Proffitt eventually landed in Hollywood where he made an appearance on the Gong Show in 1976 with Johnny's Eighth Street Buzz Band. Luckily the group wasn't gonged by the judges. According to Proffitt the appearance helped to jump start his career and throughout his time in many bands he was able do concerts with musicians and bands like Carl Perkins, Molly Hatchet, The Georgia Satellites and The Byrds.
"We did two shows with him [Carl Perkins] in Des Moines," said Proffitt. "That was the most awesome thing I've ever done."
In his later career he formed Melody Proffitt Band around his daughter, Melody, and they performed together for 10 years. Right now Proffitt travels around the midwest playing small venues in the three piece Papa Proffitt Band.
"I have learned to appreciate my love for music and still love performing," said Proffitt. "Being from Numa, Iowa has taught me to be humble and never forget where I came from."
Proffitt will be performing with the Papa Proffitt Band at The Spur on Saturday, Nov. 3 from 9 p.m. until 1 a.m. There is a $5 cover charge.
"I'm not sure how much longer I'm going to be playing music and I just want to make the best of it while I can," said Proffitt. "It's not about the money. It's about getting a good crowd there and having a good time and everybody enjoying themselves."
