OTTUMWA —
The two-man play “Peace Through Corn,” dramatizing the unprecedented relationship between Iowa farmer Roswell Garst and Soviet Premier Nikita Khrushchev, will be presented in Indian Hills Community College’s St. John Auditorium at 7:30 p.m. on Wednesday, Jan. 26.
Written by Iowa playwright Cynthia Mercati, “Peace through Corn” brings alive the amazing, true relationship that developed during the late 1950s between a brash Iowa farmer and a powerful communist dictator. The setting was the icy depths of the Cold War, a fearful time when the U.S. and the USSR were poised at the brink of mutual nuclear annihilation. Nevertheless, Garst and Khrushchev forged a unique human bond based on their shared fascination with agricultural innovation and the love of a good laugh and a ferocious debate.
“Peace through Corn” is the second theatre production Creating Great Places of Coon Rapids has sponsored. This work was commissioned by CGP to help commemorate the 50th anniversary of “Khrushchev in Iowa” celebrated in 2009. It is based in part on real dialogue as reflected in the two men’s letters and memoirs.
Now, with support of the Humanities Iowa and the National Endowment for the Humanities, as well as the Iowa Community Cultural Grant Program of the Iowa Department of Cultural Affairs, eight performances of “Peace Through Corn” are being offered to cultural organizations throughout the state. Indian Hills is the first stop on the tour schedule. Reserved seats are not required for this free, general admission-seating production.

Walking Tour around Square Wednesday
Enfys McMurry and Historic Preservation Corporation are celebrating National Historic Month by having a walking tour around the Historic Square District in Centerville Wednesday, May 23 at 1:30 p.m. Meet at Tangleberries on the south side of the Square. The tour is one hour long and then meet back at Tangleberries for tea and scones. Cost is $7 per person including tea and a scone at Tangleberries upon completion of the tour.
