CENTERVILLE — For the second day in a row Centerville was hit with a massive fire.
A fire began on the roof of the Gypsy Quarter store at 218 E. State St. in Centerville at approximately 1 p.m. Tuesday afternoon.
Centerville Fire Department responded and requested mutual aid from fire departments in Cincinnati, Mystic, Mora-via, Moulton, Albia, Seymour and Wayne County.
According to scanner chatter, the fire moved from the building housing Gypsy Quarter and into the building next door housing Clickhappy Photography and Ted Clark’s plumbing.
Emergency personnel shut down power to part of Haynes Avenue and also evacuated surrounding offices, businesses and buildings.
Witnesses said workers were working on the roof with grinders. The workers reportedly left for lunch during which time the fire started. A bystander from an area business noticed the smoke and called 911 while alerting workers inside the building.
The Daily Iowegian’s press time was 3 p.m. at which time fire fighter’s were still battling the blaze. Check out www.dailyiowegian.com for updates and also look for more details in Thursday’s edition.
