Mix of tried, true and new

The tried and true joins the new as one family in Moravia expands in more ways than one.

Jerry and Judy Power have been selling insurance as independent agents in the same office at 201 N. William in Moravia for 22 years. In July of this year, son Josh, 25, opened his own business, Power Graphics, in unused office space in the same building.

And during Moravia's Fall Festival this weekend, both businesses are holding an anniversary and grand opening, respectively, on Friday from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. and Saturday from 8 a.m. to noon. During the two days of festivities, a drawing for a $100 Power Graphics gift certificate will be held and other door prizes and refreshments will be offered.

Power Graphics offers screen printing, embroidery and vinyl graphics for T-shirts, sweatshirts, hats, banners and more. The business is also an authorized dealer for Goalsetter Basketball Systems in Sully, offering sales and installation of adjustable basketball backboards and rims, for Newton Manufacturing, offering advertising speciality products like pens, calendars and cups and for Sports Page in Pella, offering sporting goods mainly for high school teams involved in basketball, baseball and track.

Power Graphics is located at 201 N. William St. in Moravia and features both an indoor and outdoor showroom set up with Goalsetter basketball systems. The telephone number is (641) 724-3320. They are open 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. Monday through Friday.

Josh was working as a general manager for a sporting goods store in Ames when he decided to make the move.

"And I wanted to be closer to home at the same time I wanted to be my own boss," Josh said. "So I learned a little bit about screen printing and embroidery while I was up there and so I just thought it was an area that I could open a business with."

Josh also said he plans to offer sublimation, where a dye is heated on to a 100 percent polyester object. His older brother Jared, does all the graphics for the business.

Jerry and Judy Power Insurance Agency has been serving the needs of area residents since March 15, 1984, when they first opened an office in the parlor of their house in Moravia.

"We operated in that parlor for about three and one half years," Jerry said. "And then we bought a building in beautiful downtown Moravia next to the post office. And we remodeled it in 1987 and moved in around Fall Festival time."

Jerry said one reason for their 25-years of longevity has been giving more than what the customer expects.

"I think the biggest thing in business is service," Jerry said. "We've provided service for the last 25 years. With insurance that's all you have to give is service. You've got to be there when the insured needs you. When we had our office in our home, our phone rang at night. Needless to say, we had a business phone and a house phone. If you were a customer of mine, and you hit a deer tonight at 9 p.m., you could actually call our office phone and if we were at home we would pick it up. It's been that way for 25 years."

Power Insurance offers insurance for home, auto, farm, crop, business, life and health. They are an independent agency licensed to sell insurance for up to 40 different agencies.

Power Insurance also employs daughter Julie Cossolotto, 30, for seven years, Barbara Kaster for 20 plus years and Brian Felton for seven years as producers.

They are located at 201 N. William St. in Moravia. The telephone number is (641) 724-9000.

Jerry and Judy have been married since 1976 and have four children and one grandchild. Besides Josh and Julie, there is Jill Gamlin, 40 and Jared Power, 27.

Poll

This week the Iowegian wants readers to think about the recent decision by the Centerville Municipal Waterworks Board of Directors to increase the fee for late payment of water bills. In a story published in Wednesday's Ad Express, board members announced a 10 percent late fee after two days late, a $50 red tag fee for accounts unpaid after seven days late and a $25 shut off fee, water service terminated after two weeks late. The board said the decision to increase the fees associated with late payment is to encourage customers to pay their bills on time. So, the question this week is, "Are these fees too much to ask for?"

A. Yes, they are.
B. No, they are not.
C. I'm not affected so I don't care.
