CENTERVILLE —
Several Appanoose County WW II veterans recently were flown to Washington, D.C. to honor their service to the country.
Ben Dawson, Richard Smith, Zeb Earhart, Bob Rosencrants, Joe Wilson and Elvin Jay were all part of the April 24 Eastern Iowa Honor Flight out of Cedar Rapids to Washington, D.C. They were joined by approximately 86 other WW II veterans who were given a tour of war memorials in Washington, D.C. honoring their service.
"This is a tremendous honor," Ben Dawson said during a visit to the Daily Iowegian office Wednesday, April 25. "It was just fabulous. They couldn't do enough for us. They just bent over backwards for us."
Dawson said Centerville Hy-Vee gave each local veteran a disposable camera to take photos while in the nation's capital. Hy-Vee then processed each camera's photos for free, he said.
While the veterans were in Washington, D.C. they meet with several Iowa politicians including Sen. Chuck Grassley and and Rep. Dave Loebsack, Dawson said.
The "Greatest Generation" of Americans are now 80 and 90 year olds. The goal of EIHF "is to make this a very memorable and personal experience for each of them," according to the EIHF web site, www.eihonorflight.org.
EIHF's web site states the Iowa veterans toured the WWII, Korean and Iwo Jima monuments and watched the changing of the guard at Arlington National Cemetery.
The EIHF web site has a place to donate money and an application form for any veteran to fill out to be included on their next flight in June.
EIHF to date has flown 541 Iowa WW II veterans to Washington, D.C.
