Pregnancy Resource Center to open next fall

Last spring, in response to an indicated need, a group of citizens from area churches began meeting and started the process towards opening a pregnancy resource center in Centerville.

An inaugural meeting was called last spring by the previous pastor from Grace Baptist Tabernacle. Since this summer, Pastor Spencer Keroff from Centerville Assembly of God picked up the leadership mantle, and is leading the group of volunteers in the process of moving the pregnancy resource center from concept to opening.

The yet-to-be-named center, will be a non-profit organization operating under the auspices of CareNet, a network of pregnancy resource centers whose mission is to assist and promote the evangelistic, pro-life work of crisis pregnancy centers. The center’s mission will be to provide free services for women such as pregnancy tests, community support referrals (medical, social, adoptive, and spiritual), baby items, and peer counseling.

Major milestones have been completed, leading to next fall’s opening. A Steering Committee has been in place, with Pastor Spencer Keroff as chairman, Alaina Hathaway as secretary, and Pastor Carl Heien from Fairview Church of the Brethren as treasurer.

A building has been donated for the purpose of housing the center. The committee is also raising funds, and is one third of the way towards its savings goal. The center also needs one-third of its budget in pledges, and is 10 precent funded for that goal.

The committee has completed the Community Resources and Needs Assessment Survey, identifying resources already in town and services that the center can provide in the future.

The committee recently sent out fundraising letters to community businesses and churches, soliciting donations and pledges. These places will be visited in the next couple of weeks by a member of the committee asking for support.

The Steering Committee will have its next meeting at 7 p.m. Tuesday at the Drake Public Library and volunteers are welcome. For more information, to make a donation or pledge, call Alaina Hathaway at 641-856-7812.

So, the question this week is, “Will it stay or will it go?” The United States Department of Agriculture in Washington, D.C. wants to close three Farm Service Agency offices in southern Iowa, which includes the FSA office in Centerville, and consolidate the operations in order to save money. Tuesday afternoon a meeting was held at Faith United Methodist Church to allow farmers and other producers who use the Centerville FSA office to make comments about the closing to John R. Whitaker, state executive director Iowa FSA. Many questioned if the meeting Tuesday was necessary because the decision had already been made.

A. Yes, because Washington will listen.
B. No, because the decision to close the Appanoose County FSA office has already been made.
