Citywide cleanup begins next week
There are a few changes in the city curb side clean up this year which will begin next Monday, April 21. Because of new regulations, the City of Centerville will be unable to pick up microwaves, televisions and computers/monitors at the curb this year. Those items will be accepted for a fee at Rathbun Area Solid Waste transfer station located at 3020 McCarty Street in the Industrial Park.
The cost for disposal of microwaves and televisions is $10 and computer monitors can be disposed of for $5. The hours for Rathbun Area Solid Waste are Monday through Friday 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. and Saturday 8 a.m. to noon.
Other items not accepted curbside are batteries, tires, hazardous or toxic waste, yard waste, construction materials and garbage. If any of these items are left at the curb, they will not be picked up by city crews.
Details for the city appliance and furniture pickup are as follows:
North side of town--Everything must be curbside by 7 a.m. on April 21.
Pick up will occur on April 21 and 22.
Pick up for the square will be Monday April 21. All items must be in the alley by 7 a.m.
South side of town—Everything must be curbside by 7 a.m. on April 23.
Pick up will occur on April 23 and 24.
No return trips once articles have been picked up
No pilfering allowed.
Items not accepted include computers and monitors, televisions, microwaves, batteries, tires, yard waste (i.e. lawn clippings, leaves), tree limbs, hazardous or toxic waste, construction materials, garbage
Mattresses, carpeting, sofas and chairs must be wrapped in plastic.
Appliances will be picked up after all other items have been picked up.
There will be no alley pick up (except the square).
All items to be picked up must be placed curbside.
The City of Centerville and the Centerville-Rathbun Area Chamber of Commerce are also partnering for the second annual citywide spruce-up effort on April 26. Groups, businesses and individuals are asked to join in this effort from 8 a.m. to noon.
The clean-up will focus on entrance corridors, and high traffic areas although any area of town can be part of the event. The targeted areas will be divided into sections with volunteers assigned to sections. Trash bags and gloves will be provided.
Any business, organization or individual wishing to be a part of the project should contact City Hall or the Chamber to sign up. Groups will receive guidelines, safety vests and supplies before or on the clean-up day. City Hall will be open on Saturday, April 26 from 8 a.m. to noon, to assign clean up areas and provide supplies.
Groups that cannot volunteer on April 26 can still participate at any time. Any group or individual participating in a clean-up effort is asked to contact City Hall or the Chamber so that the number of volunteer hours can tracked and volunteers recognized. It is also important for safety reasons as well.
All volunteers that report a clean-up activity to the Chamber or City Hall during the month of April will be recognized in the Daily Iowegian following the clean-up effort.

Council to discuss ‘nuisance property’ at tonight’s meeting
"Property owners must be held accountable for the appearance of their property. Is there not an ordinance for automobiles setting idle for a period of time? The council has allowed automobile junk yards to appear one block off the square! Do we not want people to visit our town! Are we not trying to attract new businesses into the community anymore?"
