Farm Bureau grants giving teachers tools to teach life lessons

Melissa Thomas, who teaches K-6 special education at Moravia Elementary, recently received a grant from Farm Bureau. The grant, good for more than $160, was used to purchase farm-related materials for the classroom. "My students need extra lessons in life skills so we were awarded the grant to purchase items to teach the food groups and where food comes from," Thomas said.  Pictured with the items are students Colton Dommer and Michael Brownlee.  "We recieved a food card library, magnet food pictures for sorting, and realistic looking foods. Like food cards and actual food items. And then we read books about farms and where the food comes from," she said. Also receiving a grant was Moulton-Udell High School teacher ag instructor Briana Greiner. The grants are from the Iowa Farm Bureau Teacher Supplement Program. The program provides tools to teachers to help students learn more about how food, fuel and fiber is grown in Iowa.
