Supervisors make five new commissioner appointments

The Appanoose County Board of Supervisors appointed five new commissioners to assess damages in eminent domain. And all five are women.

Patty Lind, Cindy Latimer and Renate Deininger, all of Centerville and Margaret Wells, of Plano and Marilyn Koehler, of Udell, join 23 other realtors, city or town property owners, farmers and bankers. The decision to add five women was to bring more gender equity to the group, Supervisor Linda Rouse said.

"That was a new law that was passed this year," Rouse said. "We have to be aware, or sensitive to gender balance."

In other action, the supervisors voted 3-0 to award the contract to supply fuel during fiscal year 2010 to Agriland FS Inc. They outbid MFA Oil to supply diesel, biodiesel and gasohol for the secondary road department.

The supervisors voted 3-0 to approve a fireworks permit for Exline Community Betterment for July 4 and to abate $698 to Kenneth Duane and Tonya Marie Brown, of Mystic, because they were double assessed on their property and to abate the state from taxation for property they purchased from Richard Oil Company at the corner of Highway 2 and 5. Auditor Linda Demry said the state, which is exempt from taxation, should have been taken off the tax rolls when they purchased the property.

So, the question this week is, “Will it stay or will it go?” The United States Department of Agriculture in Washington, D.C. wants to close three Farm Service Agency offices in southern Iowa, which includes the FSA office in Centerville, and consolidate the operations in order to save money. Tuesday afternoon a meeting was held at Faith United Methodist Church to allow farmers and other producers who use the Centerville FSA office to make comments about the closing to John R. Whitaker, state executive director Iowa FSA. Many questioned if the meeting Tuesday was necessary because the decision had already been made.

A. Yes, because Washington will listen.
B. No, because the decision to close the Appanoose County FSA office has already been made.
