Officials to consider sharing resources, personnel, office space

The Centerville Municipal Waterworks Board of Trustees and two city officials met June 18 to discuss sharing resources in an effort to eliminate duplication and to save money.

Centerville City Council members Rob Lind and Bill McAfee proposed the city's street and wastewater departments and the water department would share equipment, personnel and office space. McAfee during a telephone call Monday afternoon said the idea that dates back to mid 2007 was met with some resistance.

"It's OK to not see eye to eye," McAfee said. "But the big thing is to work together to provide better services at a better rate for the customers of the city who are the residents of the city."

McAfee estimated sharing resources would save more than $68,000 a year.

Greg Gordon, a member of the Water Department Board of Trustees, Monday afternoon by telephone said the board was still in the discussion stage and had yet to determine what it wanted to do.

"We're just discussing the possibilities," Gordon said. "We'll just continue to talk about it and try to figure out the best way to work together on it. I mean, we've had some concerns and pros and cons on it."

One thing Gordon mentioned was the water department would not be consolidated and it would continue to function as a separate entity.

"We're not considering getting rid of the Centerville Municipal Waterworks," Gordon said. "We're not even considering that at all."

Gordon said the goal is to save taxpayer's money through shared resources. The exact amount of savings is speculation right now.

"We're looking more of a vision of where we want to go and just be able to operate as efficiently as we can," Gordon said.

The Board of Trustees will hold a special meeting June 30 at noon at the Waterworks Office, 112 N. 12th St., to decide if the water department should consolidate with other city departments and move the water office to City Hall.

This week the Iowegian wants readers to think about the recent decision by the Centerville Municipal Waterworks Board of Directors to increase the fee for late payment of water bills. In a story published in Wednesday's Ad Express, board members announced a 10 percent late fee after two days late, a $50 red tag fee for accounts unpaid after seven days late and a $25 shut off fee, water service terminated after two weeks late. The board said the decision to increase the fees associated with late payment is to encourage customers to pay their bills on time. So, the question this week is, "Are these fees too much to ask for?"

A. Yes, they are.
B. No, they are not.
C. I'm not affected so I don't care.
