Centerville man facing seven class D felonies

A Centerville man on three separate dates in March and April of this year delivered less than 50 kilograms of marijuana, Appanoose County Attorney Richard Scott alleges in trial information he filed June 8.

Robert Howard Wireman, 26, is charged with five counts of possession of a controlled substance with intent to deliver marijuana and two counts of failure to affix a drug tax stamp. All seven charges are class D felonies, with each punishable by up to five years in prison and at least a $750 but no more than a $7,500 fine.

Wireman was released on a $35,000 recognizance bond May 6.

Wireman filed a written arraignment and plea of not guilty to the charges June 10. A pretrial conference is scheduled for 10 a.m. Aug. 21 and trail is set for 9:30 a.m. Oct. 26.

Wireman two times on April 15, two times on March 9 and once on March 10 sold "purported marijuana" to undercover agents at four different locations in Centerville, alleges a Centerville Police Department officer writing in the criminal complaint and affidavit. All transactions were under surveillance by members of the South Central Iowa Drug Task Force and the Iowa Division of Narcotics Enforcement.

A criminal charge is merely an accusation and the defendant is presumed innocent until and unless proven guilty in a court of law.

This week the Iowegian wants readers to think about the recent decision by the Centerville Municipal Waterworks Board of Directors to increase the fee for late payment of water bills. In a story published in Wednesday's Ad Express, board members announced a 10 percent late fee after two days late, a $50 red tag fee for accounts unpaid after seven days late and a $25 shut off fee, water service terminated after two weeks late. The board said the decision to increase the fees associated with late payment is to encourage customers to pay their bills on time. So, the question this week is, "Are these fees too much to ask for?"

A. Yes, they are.
B. No, they are not.
C. I'm not affected so I don't care.
