CENTERVILLE —
Terry Geiger, governor of Rotary District 6,000 and his wife, Peggy, made the annual District Governors visit to the Centerville Rotary Club Sunday, Aug. 5.
Geiger shared the theme of International President Sakuji Tanaka, of Japan: "Peace thru Service" with the members and then he gave updates on the many international projects of other Rotary clubs.
Rotary International is dedicated to the eradication of Polio worldwide through its "Polio Plus" campaign. Annual worldwide cases of reported Polio have been reduced from 1,362 in 2010 to 111 to date in 2012. More than 7,200,000 children have been saved from Polio by this program since 1985.
Locally, the Centerville Rotary Club has planted and maintained the flowers and grasses at the Post Office for two years and approximately 15 years ago funded the flagpoles and gardens at Highways 2 and 5. Centerville Rotary also supports many community projects, provides three scholarships for Centerville High School students and recognizes "Student of the Month" at all the Centerville district schools.
Other highlights of the meeting were presenting new members certificates to Kris Laursen, administrator of Appanoose Community Care Services and Keisha McFarland, director of Municipal Housing.
Henry Ortmann was given the first annual "Rotarian of the Year" award. Ortmann has been chair of the "Student of the Month" program for more than 10 years.
