DES MOINES — What didn’t one local family bring  back from the 2012 Iowa State Fair?

Olive Jean Tarbell, of Centerville, took third in the Banana Nut Bread category during the Chiquita Ultimate Banana Bread competition judged Thursday, Aug. 9 during the 2012 Iowa State Fair.

Molly Thomas, of Centerville, took first in the Biscuits category, first in the Fruit Muffins (blueberry, date, raisin, etc.) category and third in the Corn Meal Muffins category in the Ivy's Quality Breads competition judged Wednesday, Aug. 8, prior to the start of the 2012 Iowa State Fair.

Robin Tarbell-Thomas of Centerville won Reserve Sweepstakes honors in the Honey Recipes of 100 Years competition judged Friday at the 2012 Iowa State Fair in celebration of 100 years of beekeeping in Iowa. Under BREAD AND ROLLS Robin Tarbell-Thomas took first in Honey White Bread category and first in  Oatmeal Bread category. Under QUICK BREADS Molly Thomas took first in Honey Muffins category and third in Corn Bread category. Under HONEY CREATIONS Olive Jean Tarbell took third in the Honey Butter category and second in the Old Time Honey Recipes category.

Olive Jean Tarbell won the Sweepstakes award in the ever popular Midwest Living Cookies competition held Wednesday and Thursday as part of the 2012 Iowa State Fair Foods Department judging. Under BAR COOKIES Molly Thomas took first in Brownies (frosted) category and second in Rice Krispies category; Olive Jean Tarbell took second in Brownies (unfrosted) category, third in Three Layer Bars category, third in Apple Bars category, second in  Jam Bars category, second in Rocky Road Squares category, first in Biscotti category and first in Bar Cookies Other Than Named category.

Under MOLDED OR PRESSED COOKIES Molly Thomas took first in Spritz category and second in  Peanut Butter Balls category. Olive Jean Tarbell took second in Coconut category, first in Filled Cookies category, first in Snowballs category and first in Peanut Blossoms category. Under DROP COOKIES Olive Jean Tarbell took first in Oatmeal (without raisins) category, third in Fruit Drop (dried fruit) category, second in Chocolate Chip category, second in White Chocolate category, Honorable Mention in Butterscotch Oatmeal category, third in Ranger category, first in Molasses category, second in Chocolate Chip Oatmeal category, first in Sour Cream category, second in Chocolate Drop category, second in Dream Jumbles category and first in Double Chocolate Oatmeal/Peanut Butter category.

Molly Thomas took second in Coconut Macaroon category.

Under HEALTH COOKIES Olive Jean Tarbell took first in High Fiber category, third in Cookies Made with a Sugar Substitute category, second in Low Cholesterol category and Honorable Mention Cookies Made With Honey category. Under REFRIGERATED AND ROLLED COOKIES Olive Jean Tarbell took first Rolled Sugar (unfrosted) category and second in Rolled Sugar (frosted) category. Under ETHNIC COOKIES Molly Thomas took second in Italian category. Olive Jean Tarbell took third in Oriental category and second in Ethnic Cookies Other Than Named category.

In the C&H Canned Fruits competition judged Thursday, Aug. 9 during the 2012 Iowa State Fair Robin Tarbell-Thomas took first in Mixed Fruits category, second in Bing Cherries category, third in Peaches category and third in Plums category.

In the C&H Canned Conserves competition judged Thursday, Aug. 9 during the 2012 Iowa State Fair Robin Tarbell-Thomas took second in Apple category, third in Apricot category, second in Grape category and Honorable Mention in Rhubarb in Combination category.

“A conserve is similar to jam. Conserves generally contain two or more fruits, one of which is usually a citrus fruit. They contain nuts, raisins or coconut. In its truest form, a conserve contains both nuts and raisins. Conserves are flavored to accompany meat and poultry. They can also be used as spreads on bread products,” according to the Iowa State Fair.

In the C&H Canned Preserves competition judged Tuesday, Aug. 7 prior to the start of the 2012 Iowa State Fair Robin Tarbell-Thomas took second in Cherry category and third in Peach category.

“A preserve is a small whole fruit or uniformly sized medium-large pieces of fruit in clear, heavy and slightly jellied syrup. Preserves contain plump, tender fruits,” according to the Iowa State Fair.

Olive Jean Tarbell claimed second place and a $150 gift card in the Healthy Snacks by Kellogg contest judged Sunday at the 2012 Iowa State Fair.

Robin Tarbell-Thomas took second place in the Healthy Creations competition's Healthy Recipe Makeover class judged Monday at the 2012 Iowa State Fair.

Judges awarded an Honorable Mention to  Olive Jean Tarbell in the Karo Creative Cookie and Dessert contest judged Wednesday at the 2012 Iowa State Fair.

Robin Tarbell-Thomas took second in the Grapefruit category, third in the Orange category, third in the Peach category, third in the Apricot-Citrus category and second in the Marmalades Other Than Named category in the C&H Canned Marmalades competition judged Wednesday, Aug. 8, prior to the start of the 2012 Iowa State Fair.

“Marmalade is a soft fruit jelly containing small pieces of fruit or peel evenly suspended in translucent jelly. Marmalade often contains citrus fruit,” according to the Iowa State Fair.

Robin Tarbell-Thomas took third in Butterhorn Rolls category and Honorable Mention in the Whole Wheat Pan Rolls (1/2 Whole) category in the King Arthur Yeast Rolls competition judged Tuesday, Aug. 7 prior to the start of the 2012 Iowa State Fair.

Robin Tarbell-Thomas earned Reserve Sweepstakes honors in the King Arthur Flour Bread competition in 28 different categories judged Tuesday, Aug. 7, prior to the start of the 2012 Iowa State Fair. She also took second in Cheese category, third in French category, first in Onion category, first in White category, second in Sourdough category and first in Whole Wheat category.

Molly Thomas took first in Cake Balls category, third in Pound (unfrosted) category and second in Butter category in the "Smile in Every Aisle" Cakes competition judged Tuesday, Aug. 7, prior to the start of the 2012 Iowa State Fair. Robin Tarbell-Thomas took second in Any Fruit category.

The Iowa State Fair Food Department is the largest of any state fair in the country. Due to the large number of classes, Food Department judging begins prior to the Fair in the Elwell Family Food Center sponsored by Blue Bunny.
