Sights and sounds of the Christmas season

We've all heard of Christmas in July, but for Steve Kozak, this truly was the beginning of his Christmas Spirit. In July he began programming the lights for his unique Christmas display.

Now 3,500 lights later and 16 channels that are computer controlled, Centerville is home to yet another amazing Christmas display.

Steve designed the display in his parents, Frank and Jean Kozak's yard, at 921 E. Walden and as visitors come by they are encouraged to tune their radio to 89.3 FM where they can sit and listen to Christmas music that is timed to the light display.

Several hours have been spent on the animated display. Kozak said that he spent 4-6 hours per song programming and it took six hours to set up the lights. "I didn't really know what making the display would entail until I got the controller for a contest that I entered at Hy-Vee where I built a Margarittaville display," said Kozak.

Quite a few people have stopped by and watched the display with some repeating their visits.

"I have learned a lot as I got this set up and have more ideas for next year's display," said Kozak.

Kozak's favorite part of the display is to the lyrics, "Broughton Overturf."

The display can be seen Sunday-Thursday from 4-10 p.m. and on Friday and Saturday from 4-11 p.m. In bad weather viewing of the display may be cancelled. All weather related information, as well as around the clock Christmas music, can be heard at 89.3 FM.

So, the question this week is, “Will it stay or will it go?” The United States Department of Agriculture in Washington, D.C. wants to close three Farm Service Agency offices in southern Iowa, which includes the FSA office in Centerville, and consolidate the operations in order to save money. Tuesday afternoon a meeting was held at Faith United Methodist Church to allow farmers and other producers who use the Centerville FSA office to make comments about the closing to John R. Whitaker, state executive director Iowa FSA. Many questioned if the meeting Tuesday was necessary because the decision had already been made.

A. Yes, because Washington will listen.
B. No, because the decision to close the Appanoose County FSA office has already been made.
