Centerville City Council to meet tonight

At tonight’s Centerville City Council meeting the incumbent mayor and two new council members will be sworn-in.

Incumbent Marsha A. Mitchell, who fought off four challengers, will take the oath of office as Centerville’s mayor. Taking the oath as Centerville’s new councilman in Ward 2 is Robbie Morgan, replacing Kris Koestner. Taking the oath as Centerville’s new at-large councilman is Darrin Hamilton, replacing Mike Zintz.

The mayoral term lasts for two years. A council term lasts for four years and starts at the first of the year.

In other action tonight, Gordie L. Long, the owner of Gordie’s Bar and Grill, is listed on the agenda to discuss bar liquor licenses.

Beyond that, the council has an agenda item to discuss renewing Gordie’s Bar and Grill’s class C liquor license with Sunday sales and changes to the city’s municipal code relating to the sale and consumption of beer and liquor and licenses for bars. Any changes decided on tonight would be aired in a public hearing at 5:30 p.m. Jan. 4.

On the table for the council to decide are five different amendments and one addition to the code relating to the sale and consumption of beer and liquor.

Also tonight, the council will discuss a 28 E agreement concerning the South Central Iowa Interagency Drug Task Force, which establishes a working mechanism among the various agencies “who may call upon other members for exchange of assistance as required.” This agreement will supersede all other previously signed agreements, which involves the police departments in the cities of Centerville, Albia, Chariton and Creston, and the sheriff’s departments in Appanoose, Lucas, Monroe, Wayne, Marion, Clarke, Union, Ringgold, Decatur and Madison counties.

This week the Iowegian wants readers to think about the recent decision by the Centerville Municipal Waterworks Board of Directors to increase the fee for late payment of water bills. In a story published in Wednesday's Ad Express, board members announced a 10 percent late fee after two days late, a $50 red tag fee for accounts unpaid after seven days late and a $25 shut off fee, water service terminated after two weeks late. The board said the decision to increase the fees associated with late payment is to encourage customers to pay their bills on time. So, the question this week is, "Are these fees too much to ask for?"

A. Yes, they are.
B. No, they are not.
C. I'm not affected so I don't care.
