Join in an antler hunt Saturday, March 9 at Sharon Bluffs State Park Shelterhouse at 1 p.m. Pre-register by calling the office at (641) 856-8528 or Amber Hoffman’s cell at (641) 895-7499. Come learn and see some different types of antlers and which animals grows them. What are the differences between horns and antlers? Plus some great tips on finding sheds here in Appanoose County. After the discussion you will be turned loose in teams to use those skills you just learned, to find the sheds that have been hidden around the shelterhouse and on the trails. Join in an American woodcock watch on Saturday, March 9 at Sharon Bluffs State Park Center 2000 at 6 p.m. Come listen to the dynamic display of the American woodcock. It is that time of the spring to hear their courtship song, “Skydance.” Wear long pants and hiking shoes; we will have to hike to hear them calling.
Join in an early wildflower walk and maple syrup collection on Sunday, March 10 at Sharon Bluffs State Park Shelterhouse at 1:30 p.m. Amber Hoffman will be leading a hike through the bluffs after a short discussion on the different wildflowers that are starting the spring bloom. Wear clothing for hiking and considering that we live in Iowa, who knows what the weather is going to be. We will hike as long as it isn’t snowing or severe weather. We will also stop by our tapped maple trees and collect sap. Back at Center 2000 we will cook down the sap to make maple syrup.
