CENTERVILLE —
More than 100 participants are expected to attend the inaugural “Get Your Rear in Gear” 5K Run/Walk in Centerville on Saturday, April 6 at the Centerville Reservoir.
Runners, walkers and volunteers will gather to raise awareness of the nation’s number two cancer killer, and raise funds for colon cancer prevention screening.
The day will include opportunities for celebration of the survivors and support for care givers and those who may have been left behind.
Registration opens at 8 a.m. with the 5K starting at 9 a.m.
Funds raised at the “Get Your Rear in Gear” event will stay in the Appanoose County area, helping with prevention, early detection and treatment and healthy living projects for this disease through the Appanoose County Wellness Coalition.
Event director, Heather McKelvey, describes why she chose to organize a “Get Your Rear in Gear” event in Centerville.
“Just last year, I was diagnosed with colon cancer, due to early screening,” she says. “My mother died of the disease and I realized that I need to get the word out about the life saving importance of early screening and detection.”

The pre-registration fee until March 30 is $20. After that date the fee is $25.
Race day registration is available at the event. Information about volunteering, fundraising, sponsoring an event or forming a team is also posted on the website.
Local sponsors of the event include the Appanoose County Wellness Coalition and Mercy Medical Center.
“Get Your Rear in Gear” events are presented nationally by the Colon Cancer Coalition, a non-profit organization based in Minneapolis.
The events are 100 percent volunteer-driven in communities throughout the United States.
The Colon Cancer Coalition distributes funds raised at “Get Your Rear in Gear” events back into local communities for colon cancer education, prevention and screening.
By making the words colon, colorectal and colonoscopy a part of the everyday language, they believe they can overcome the fear and decrease deaths from this largely preventable cancer.
