Don’t miss the 11th annual Pioneer Festival & Civil War Days this year at Prairie Trails Museum of Wayne County in Corydon. To commemorate the 150th Anniversary of the American Civil War we will travel back in time to 1861. Wayne County Historical Society will again partner with 3rd Iowa Battery C Light Field Artillery in a joint event.
A Civil War Reenactment will be held Oct 5-7, at Corydon Lake Park. The enactor groups will set up camp on Friday, Oct 5. President Lincoln (Lance Mack) will visit area schools to share with schoolchildren some insight into events of 150 years ago during the War Between the States.
A special event Friday night is Dinner with President Lincoln at the Inn of the Six-Toed Cat at 6 p.m. The dinner menu will include some of President Lincoln’s favorite dishes of 1860’s. Reservations are required due to limited seating. Call The Inn at (641) 873-4900 or the Museum at (641) 872-2211 to reserve your place at the dinner table.
Saturday morning 9:30 a.m. at Prairie Trails Museum you can enjoy a Ladies Tea followed by a fashion show of 1860’s dress. Carol Shannon will give some insight into customs and dress of the 1860s.
A Civil War Battle Flag from 3rd Iowa Cavalry will be on display from the State Historical Society of Iowa all day in the Museum’s Main Street Gallery. Sheila Hanke, conservator for the project, will be on hand to talk about the units, flags, and stabilization process.
There will be a Laplanders Quilt Guild show held in the museum lobby all day Saturday. A number of beautiful hand-crafted quilts made by this talented group will be on display.
The encampment at Corydon Lake Park opens for the public at 9:30 a.m. Saturday morning with Infantry and Artillery drills followed by an Officer Call. One can walk around the camp, see the tents, campfires, and experience a bit of what life was like for soldiers 150 years ago.
At 2 p.m., a battle reenactment, Thunder In the Woods, can be experienced at Corydon Lake Park. You will feel the ground thunder as the canons fire.
At 3 p.m. the activities begin in Prairie Trails Museum Heritage Barn. Enjoy a wonderful fall afternoon as you take a ride in a horse-drawn wagon. Other activities throughout the afternoon include rug weaving, spinning wool, making rope, and blacksmith demonstrations. Welcome We Help will have an ice cream social.
At 4 p.m. there will be a special ceremony in the museum’s west wing conducted by the Iowa Dept. of Sons of Union Veterans of the Civil War. The dedication of a GAR stained glass window from the Lineville Methodist Church donated to Prairie Trails Museum by SUVCW will officially open the new exhibit.
The main museum building will close at 6 p.m. to allow everyone to enjoy evening activities in the Heritage Barn and park.
Children are invited to enjoy old fashioned hands-on crafts and activities throughout the afternoon. This is a chance to learn how earlier generations of children had fun. Of course each child can paint a pumpkin to take home. For those wanting some baked goods to take home there will be an opportunity to win during the cake walk in front of the barn beginning at 4 p.m.
Bring your appetite for a chuck wagon meal of roast beef or pulled pork sandwich, salad, baked beans, chips and drink served by Burton & Linda Prunty, suggested donation $7 for adults. There will also be a children’s meal of hot dog, chips, and drink for $3. The meal will be served from 5:30–7 p.m. in the Heritage Barn.
Hear a first person account of a soldier’s battle experiences at 6:30 p.m. Beginning at 7 p.m. you can dance to music provided by The Exline Family. To conclude the action packed day head back out to Corydon Lake Park at 10 p.m. to experience Night Fire as the cannons fill the air with sound and color.
Sunday events at Corydon Lake Park begin with infantry and artillery drills followed by Church Services conducted by Leroy Perkins. Day two battle reenactment, Thunder In the Woods, will begin at 1 p.m. Civil War Encampment events conclude at 3 p.m.
Bring your lawn chairs, sit a spell and enjoy all the activities at Prairie Trails Museum and Corydon Lake Park.
