CENTERVILLE —
On Tuesday, Oct. 16 at approximately 8:25 a.m. an Amish buggy carrying two females, ages 18 and 10, collided with an Appanoose County Secondary Roads semi trailer driven by Dennis Jackson, 53, of Centerville, in the 12800 block of 580th Street, southeast of Numa, according to a press release issued by the Appanoose County Sheriff's Office Tuesday.
Investigation of the crash indicates that the Amish buggy was travelling east on 580th Street and the semi trailer was travelling west bound on 580th Street. As the semi trailer was approaching from the opposite direction, the horse pulling the buggy unexpectedly moved to the left, pulling the buggy into the path of the semi trailer.
The driver of the semi trailer immediately applied the brakes. The buggy and semi trailer collided in the west bound lane of 580th Street.
Both female occupants of the buggy were ejected from the buggy. Emergency personnel from the Appanoose County Sheriff’s Office, Iowa State Patrol, Mercy Ambulance, Seymour Fire and Rescue, and Centerville Fire and Rescue responded to the scene and began treatment of the injured.
The 18-year-old female occupant of the buggy was transported by air ambulance to a Des Moines hospital and the 10-year-old female occupant was transported to the Wayne County Hospital in Corydon by private vehicle where she was treated.
The driver of the tractor trailer was not injured.
Damage to the buggy was estimated at $3,000 and damage to the tractor was estimated at $1,000.
The names of the driver and occupants of the buggy were not available at time of the press release.
The investigation continues by the Appanoose County Sheriff and Iowa State Patrol.
