CENTERVILLE —
It was a cool afternoon in Centerville Saturday but almost 30 adults and children came to Lakeview Elementary to participate in the first BOB Mob Goblin 5K Walk and Run.
Event organizer Lauren Jones said 15 pre-registered to participate. She said she was hoping for a better turnout but figured the cooler weather may have kept some people home.
Jones, 25, of Centerville, dressed in a pink ballerina costume, said she talked to the Betterment or Bust group about a fundraising event and pitched the idea of a 5K run and walk.
"Running has always been my passion," Jones said.
BOB Mob 5K participants started at Lakeview, then on to Cottage Street, Lelah Bradley Park where they took the trail around the reservoir and then back to the track at Lakeview to finish at the 50 yard line.
Minutes before the 5K the children, all dressed in costume, raced one lap around the track at Lakeview.
WInning the one lap dash was Jacinda Reed, 12. Coming in second was Sam Hash, 8. Taking third was Brooklyn Reed, 9.
Jacinda and sister Brooklyn were dressed in ghoulish attire. Their parents are Brandan and Jen Reed of Corydon.
Sam was dressed as a ninja. His parents are C.J. and Kate Hash of Centerville.
Participants were asked to dress in their favorite Halloween costume and almost everyone did. Where else did Captain America, Julius Caesar, a ballerina, ghouls, fairies, a ninja and all gather in one one place in Centerville to raise money for the Safe Routes to School project.
Jones is no stranger to organizing run and walk events. In April of this year she organized the 5K for the grand opening of the north shore trail at Rathbun Lake for the Appanoose County Trails group.
