CENTERVILLE —
The following is an update on the Appanoose County road system in order to answer questions concerning flood damage and other operational items.
Five bridges are closed at this time:
• Bridge on 565th Street 0.1 mile east of 153rd Avenue
• Bridge on 594th Street just south of 590th Street
• Bridge on 560th Street 0.8 miles west of 183rd Avenue
• Bridge on 216th Street 0.3 miles north of the Centerville city limits. This bridge is closed and will remain closed, but has been replaced with a new road named 502nd Street between 215th Avenue and 216th Avenue.
• Bridge on 590th Street 0.3 miles West of 300th Avenue. This bridge provides access to the DNR wet land area.
The bridge on 195th Avenue 0.1 miles south of 555th Street (The Old Dump Road) is presently open but may be closed on short notice if the south approach fill becomes unstable.
Foreseeable repairs:
• 24 open bridges requiring permanent repairs, in addition to the closed bridges.
• 45 culverts requiring repair or replacement.
• 33 erosion sites which consist of slides or stream erosion requiring repair.
• Replacement of approximately $1,500,000 of gravel.
The estimated cost to repair the above damage from the storms is approximately $3 million. Appanoose County Secondary Roads Department cannot do these repairs until FEMA money is available to help pay the cost. Note that only flood damage occurring between June 1 and Aug. 31, 2010 are eligible for federal FEMA funds. FEMA provides funding for 75 percent of the approved damage cost. The state of Iowa provides funding for 10 percent of the approved damage cost. Appanoose County pays 15 percent of the approved damage cost. The county’s share is estimated at $450,000.
Some landowners have chosen to dig the dirt out of the ditches and put it back in their fields at their own personal cost because the county is not able to do the work in a timely manner. Landowners are allowed to work on the right-of-way if they obtain a no-cost permit and have a $1 million liability insurance policy on file in the County Engineers office. A “Work-on-Right of Way” permit is required by Chapter 318 of Iowa law. The application form is available on the county’s Web site at www.appanoosecounty.net. Walking Tour around Square Wednesday
Enfys McMurry and Historic Preservation Corporation are celebrating National Historic Month by having a walking tour around the Historic Square District in Centerville Wednesday, May 23 at 1:30 p.m. Meet at Tangleberries on the south side of the Square. The tour is one hour long and then meet back at Tangleberries for tea and scones. Cost is $7 per person including tea and a scone at Tangleberries upon completion of the tour. School board approves master contract agreement, hires Spanish teacher
The Centerville School Board held a regular meeting Monday, May 14 at the Administration Building.
During the meeting the board approved the resignation of Jerry Meredith from Lakeview custodian and Chuck Banks from his coaching positions.
