In the tradition of the coffee houses of Europe, the Thuringer Salonquintett brings their wonderful combination of spontaneous musicality with fun and innovative programming to the stage at Simon Estes Auditorium on Monday, Feb. 4, at 7:30 p.m.
This performance is brought to Centerville by the Centerville Concert Association as their third performance of the current concert season.
Committed to the wonderful central European tradition of light and entertaining music, transcending the notions of “classical” and “popular” music, the quintet provides a light-hearted fun evening of great entertainment. The quintet is comprised of the usual Kaffehaus instrumentation of two violins (one doubling viola), cello, bass and piano. They are renowned for their demandingly high performance standards. This combination of technical brilliance with easy listening, and fun programming has guaranteed the quintet a growing world-wide audience.
The group's repertoire ranges from the Viennese Classics of the mid-1700s to the eternally beautiful waltzes, gallops, and fantasies of the 19th century and has expanded to include some American favorites by Cole Porter and George Gershwin as well as commissions by leading composers writing in current idioms.
The Thuringer Salonquintett traces its roots back to 1974 in East Germany where the group achieved great recognition on the East German music scene. 1999 was an important year with its first tour of the United States including stops at Carnegie Hall, and National Public Radio's live one hour broadcast of Performance Today.
Admission is by season membership from Centerville, Ottumwa, Fairfield or Washington. Single tickets will be available at the door for $15. The Centerville Concert Board has booked the talent for the 2013-2014 season and the series includes the Sons of the Pioneers and the Unexpected Surfer Boys Tribute to Beach Boys and Broadway. The board has also voted to give music patrons an opportunity to purchase next season's adult memberships for only $30 at the last two concerts. This is a $5 discount over the regular cost of $35.
