CENTERVILLE —
On Feb. 14 from 12 to 1 p.m. the Women's Crisis Center and Shelter, SIEDA Community Action, Royal Neighbors of Exline and area citizens will join with activists around the world for ONE BILLION RISING, the largest day of action in the history of V-Day, the global activist movement to end violence against women and girls.
Everyone is invited to gather at the Courthouse Square in Centerville at 12 p.m. on Feb. 14 to witness the signing of a proclamation by Mayor Jim Senior designating Feb. 14, 2013 as “End Violence Against Women Day” in Centerville.
A banner will also be available from 12 to 1 p.m. to sign and send to Gov. Terry Branstad encouraging him to continue to fund women's crisis shelters and outreach services in Iowa.
ONE BILLlON RISING began as a call to action based on the staggering statistic that one in three women on the planet will be beaten or raped during her lifetime. With the world population at 7 billion, this adds up to more than one billion women and girls. On Feb. 14, V-Day's 15th anniversary, Centerville will join activists, writers, thinkers, celebrities and women and men across the world as we express their outrage, demand change, strike, dance and rise in defiance of the injustices women suffer, demanding an end at last to violence against women.
