Albia volleyball returns good core

CENTERVILLE — The Albia Lady Dee volleyball coach Tessa Simpson looks to build on last season as she enters her second year at the helm of the Albia High School program. “I can tell the girls are more confident as compared to last year, and we return a good core from last season’s team and the newcomers will be able to contribute right away,” observed the coach.

Returning letter winners from the 2010 team are three seniors. Alex Casebolt is a defensive specialist who received honorable mention All SCC recognition. Right side hitter Ali Adams and middle hitter Brooke Sinnott also bring experience and leadership to the team.

Junior setter Hannah DeBruin returns while sophomores Brooke Bettis (outside hitter) and Hannah Dustin (honorable mention All SCC outside hitter) also bring varsity experience.

Significant newcomers to the varsity ranks will be seniors Megan Showers (setter) and Anna Kerber (outside hitter). Anna Riley, a junior outside right hitter ,will be ready to contribute as well.

“Last season our overall record was 7-21,” stated Coach Simpson. “We won our home tournament and we hope to repeat as tournament winners as well as being more competitive in the SCC. The all conference selections were very senior dominated last year so it will be interesting to see how other teams fill the holes left by those players.”

Coach Simpson stated that the girls seem really driven to be successful and improve while setting challenging individual and team goals for themselves. The varsity opens play on Aug. 25 in Fairfield followed by hosting the Albia Invitational on Aug. 27 and the full squad will be in action for a 9/JV/varsity contest with Sigourney on Aug. 30.

This week the Iowegian wants readers to think about President Barack Obama. Since Barack Obama was elected president, two significant things have occurred: The military repealed the "Dont' Ask, Don't Tell" policy allowing gays and lesbians to openly serve and just recently he publicly said he supports gay marriage. For some, these actions signal a shift away from God, morality and threatens national security. Others say it's about time people in same-sex relationships can wed and openly gay service members do not threaten national security. Now, depending on who you listen to, President Obama is the first "gay" president of the United States. Is that something to worry about? So, the question this week is, "President Barack Obama, the first "gay" president of the United States. Is it cause for concern?"

A. Yes it is.
B. No it is not.
C. Don't care.
D. Not sure.
