CENTERVILLE —
In his first year as Eddyville-Blakesburg cross country coach, Mike Comfort got his boys team to finish second in the SCC and the girls team fifth. The boys were ninth in district competition.
The boys team captured the Eddyville-Blakesburg Invitational and Clarke Invitational a season ago.
This year’s boys team will start with defending South Central Conference champion and two-time state qualifier, Christopher Welch. He is one of the best runners in this part of the state and only a junior.
All-SCC Steven Donohue, a senior, will give the Rockets a salty one-two start. Juniors Hunter Wilz and Bradley Versteegh are returning letterwinners. Coach Comfort will fill out the team with younger, untested runners.
On the girls side, juniors Dana Armstrong and Morgan Pettyjohn will lead the way.
“We have a lot of unknowns,” said Coach Comfort. “Half our team is new to running. We have talent, but we need to work hard to be successful. Our conference finish could be anywhere from first to sixth based on how things develop.”
