Poker run benefit for Precious Angels

Saturday morning up to 50 motorcyclists departed from the F.O.E. Eagles Aerie 2675 in Centerville on a poker run to benefit Precious Angels. The club treasurer and Eagle Riders vice president, Tim Moore, said they sold at least 109 poker hands. Hands sold one for $5 or three for $10. Last year the Eagle Riders held a benefit run for Jennifer Starr and a charity auction for Angel's Hands. The route the riders took for the poker run took them west out of Centerville, north through Mystic, Walnut City, Griffinsville, Confidence, Russell, Chariton, Oakley and Lacona before heading back south for the final stop in Melrose at the Ole Red Barn to determine who drew the highest hand. Precious Angels is a volunteer organization that distributes clothing, burial outfits and caskets to families who have a stillborn or preemie baby and cannot afford the items. Precious Angels is a non-profit organization that receives no state or federal funding and depends entirely on contributions. The Precious Angels Web site is www.precious-angels.org.

So, the question this week is, “Will it stay or will it go?” The United States Department of Agriculture in Washington, D.C. wants to close three Farm Service Agency offices in southern Iowa, which includes the FSA office in Centerville, and consolidate the operations in order to save money. Tuesday afternoon a meeting was held at Faith United Methodist Church to allow farmers and other producers who use the Centerville FSA office to make comments about the closing to John R. Whitaker, state executive director Iowa FSA. Many questioned if the meeting Tuesday was necessary because the decision had already been made.

A. Yes, because Washington will listen.
B. No, because the decision to close the Appanoose County FSA office has already been made.
