Lady Mohawks bring back five starters

CENTERVILLE — The Moravia Lady Mohawks bring back five starters from the team that went 9-11 and finished second in the Bluegrass Conference last season. Two of those starters are also coming off seasons that led to all-conference selections.

Junior Katelyn Tracy was an unanimous decision for first team all-conference last season after recording 211 kills and 67 blocks last year – both team leading numbers.

Senior Molly Gheer earned second team all-conference last season with 97 kills and 78 digs.

Those also returning include Annie Moore, Abby Wilson and Cheyenne Rowley.

“The group of girls we have this year are a tight knit group of girls and work well together on the court,” head coach Andrea Bedford said. “They have had great attitudes so far this year and have been very dedicated to the team. They are also very hard working, Chris and I couldn’t be more proud of the effort they have put forth this season so far. We are returning our top hitters and setters from last year so I would say our weakness is going to be losing our libero. We have been working hard on our passing this year and hope to be able to overcome that weakness.”

There are several young and talented girls that make the future for Moravia volleyball continue to look bright. Shaye Brewer, Hannah Eastlick, Samantha Williams, Jessica Posovich, Devyn Johnson, Becca Albertson, Brooklyn Benjamin and Shania Sandberg make up the rest of the squad that stands behind the starting rotation dominated by upperclassmen this season.

After going 6-2 in conference play last season, Moravia will be looking to top Lamoni and Twin Cedars as they strive for a top-two finish in conference play.

“We are hoping to finish in the top two in the conference again this year,” Bedford said. “We strive to get better with each practice.”

This week the Iowegian wants readers to think about President Barack Obama. Since Barack Obama was elected president, two significant things have occurred: The military repealed the "Dont' Ask, Don't Tell" policy allowing gays and lesbians to openly serve and just recently he publicly said he supports gay marriage. For some, these actions signal a shift away from God, morality and threatens national security. Others say it's about time people in same-sex relationships can wed and openly gay service members do not threaten national security. Now, depending on who you listen to, President Obama is the first "gay" president of the United States. Is that something to worry about? So, the question this week is, "President Barack Obama, the first "gay" president of the United States. Is it cause for concern?"

A. Yes it is.
B. No it is not.
C. Don't care.
D. Not sure.
