Hoarding topic of discussion at IHCC Ottumwa

OTTUMWA — The symptoms of compulsive hoarding and how to deal with someone suffering from this disorder will be discussed at a one-day workshop at Indian Hills Community College on Friday, June 1.

Nancy Blum of the University of Iowa Carver College of medicine and Becky Esker, a certified professional organizer from Cedar Rapids, will lead the seminar which will run from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. in the Rural Health Education Center on IHCC’s Ottumwa Campus.

Obsessive-Compulsive Disorder is not only a source of distress for persons who are unable to control the behavior, but affects those who live with the hoarder, often leading to extremely strained and/or broken relationships.

The workshop will focus on skill building for efficiently and effectively working with a hoarder, the chronically disorganized and those simply needing some basic organizing help. Nurses, social workers, administrators, department heads in long term care, residential care providers as well as family members are encouraged to attend.

Continuing education units will be awarded to those enrolling in the conference. The cost to attend is $50, which includes tuition, handouts and lunch.
