Statewide drought conditions and the current high temperatures, combined with near historic low water levels in Iowa lakes, rivers and streams for this time of year, have caused increased demand for water.
The Iowa Utilities Board encourages Iowans to be proactive and conserve water whenever possible. With dry weather conditions expected to persist, consumers using simple water conservation tips can reduce monthly water bills and serve the public interest.
The IUB and National Association of Regulatory Utility Commissioners have partnered with the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency since 2008 to promote water efficiency and conservation through its WaterSense® program. A wealth of water-saving information is available at www.epa.gov/watersense.
The IUB also recommends customers consider the following water conservation solutions: Avoid watering during the heat of the day. It is most efficient to water plants and lawns in the morning or evening; water only gardens and lawns, not streets and sidewalks; run dishwashers and clothes washers only with full loads, using the water-saver cycle; wash produce in a basin.
