Opal Martin, 94, passed on to meet her Lord on Aug. 18, 2012 at the Continental Care Center in Seymour where she had been a resident since October of 2011.
Opal Laurice Martin, the oldest and only daughter of Lloyd Franklin Stephens and Eva May (Weddle) Stephens was born March 28, 1918 near Hale, Mo. She was baptized in October of 1930 by Ralph Acree of the Church of Christ. She graduated from Hale High School in 1935. With a third grade teacher's certificate and 10 hours of college credit, she began teaching rural schools in 1936 for eight years. In 1944 she moved to Kansas City, Kan. where she taught second grade.
On Oct. 3, 1948 she married Clyde Parker Martin where they made their home on his farm hear Winigan, Mo. She taught nine more years in the rural schools where she rode a horse 5.5 miles to and from school. Then she began her 24 years at Green City teaching second grade. She taught for a total of 42 years, retiring in 1983. Opal received her Bachelor of Science degree in education from Central Missouri State University in Warrensburg Mo. in February of 1944 and her Master of Arts in elementary school administration from Northeast Missouri State University in Kirksville, Mo. in 1962. She received the 1972 Outstanding Elementary Teacher of America; in 1975 was listed in Who's Who in Missouri and in 2003 received the NEI Golden Apple Award.
She loved the Lord and her family and greatly enjoyed photography, collecting recipes and genealogy. She was a co-author of the Martin-Wilson Family Tree, published in 1989 and authored the Weddle Family Tree in 1994. She was a member of the Grant Street Church of Christ in Unionville, Mo.; Alpha Delta Kappa International Sorority; American Association of University Women; Kirksville Area Retired Teachers Association and American Legion Auxiliary. In 1996 Clyde and Opal moved to Centerville to be near their daughter and family.
She was preceded in death by her husband Clyde in 2000; her parents; and her only brother, Charles Lloyd Stephens. Those left to honor Opal's memory include her daughter, Gayla, and son-in-law, Michael Sharp, of Centerville; two grandsons, Justin Sharp of Chariton and Tyler Sharp of Cedar Falls; one step-grandson, Zach Sharp of California; a nephew, Lloyd Dennis Stephens; a niece, Marilyn Khulman; and several great-nieces and nephews.
Funeral services will be held at Ruschmeier Funeral Home in Green City, Mo. Thursday, Aug. 23 at 10 a.m. Visitation will be one hour prior to the service. Interment will be at the Winigan Cemetery in Winigan, Mo.
In lieu of flowers, memorials may be given to the 18-80 Club in Centerville or the Winigan Cemetery.
