Lester Strunk

CENTERVILLE — Lester Paul Strunk "Punk"  was born Oct. 28, 1916 and passed away July 24, 2012 at the Monroe County Hospital in Albia at the age of 95 years old.  

He was the fourth of seven children born  into the farming family of Daniel Logan and Iva Edna (Miller) Strunk  on their farm on Soap Creek in Appanoose County.  He and his siblings, Lazelle, Russell, Eleanor, Bob and Betty, walked through the pastures to Miller School and also attended Miller Church where he made a profession of faith in Christ.

Lester married Betty Laura Luse, "The Best Girl He Could Find!" on May 20, 1945 at her parents home south of Moravia.  They started their lives with the 80 acres Lester had and a few head of heifer that Betty purchased with her money from teaching school.  They remained on the same farm until 1985 when they retired to their home in Moravia where they attended the Moravia Nazarene Church. They raised four children on the farm, Beverly Ann, Mary Louise, Joan Ione and John Michael.  Lester and Betty were recognized cattle, hog and sheep producers and received awards for their accomplishments. The newspaper was out to photograph their ewe that gave birth to quadruplets.  

Lester enjoyed the farm life.  He enjoyed attending livestock sales, taking vacations to the mountains, visit with his farmer friends and eating his wife's amazing  homemade pies. In his later years he recognized a need to know Christ and visited with many friends about about eternity. "I don't want you to miss heaven!" he told them.   

Lester is survived by:  Wife, Betty of Ankeny; daughters Beverly Ann Strunk, of California, Mary (Don) Godwin, Joan (Dwight) Axtell, both of Ankeny; Son, John (Teresa) Strunk of Moravia;  six grandchildren, Paul (Beth) Silas of Washington, D.C., Phil (Saira) Silas of New Berlin, Ill., Carey (Matt) Clark of Ankeny, Chris (Mary) Axtell of West Des Moines, Courtney (Adam) Dahl of Winterset, Michael Strunk of Moravia; eight great grandchildren, Michael, Joshua and Jacob Silas, Lauren and Carter Clark, Norah and Lolah Axtell, Eva Dahl. Sister, Betty Caster of Cedar Rapids.

He was proceeded in death by:  his parents and grandparents; brothers, Lazelle, Russell, Bob; sisters, Eleanor Burton, Gladys Strunk (infant); son-in-law, David Daniels.

Funeral services will be 11a.m. Friday, July 27, 2012 at the Moravia Church of the Nazarene, Moravia with Pastor Ken Martin officiating.  Visitation will be from 9-11 a.m. Friday, July 27 at the Moravia Church of the Nazarene.  Burial will be in the Hillcrest Cemetery, Moravia.  

A memorial has been established to the Moravia Church of the Nazarene and may be mailed to the Lange Funeral Home. Lange Funeral Home, Moravia is in charge of arrangements.  Condolences may be left at www.langefh.com.
