Floyd Eugene VerPloeg

LOVILIA — Floyd Eugene VerPloeg, 74, of Lovilia, died on Friday, Aug. 13, 2010 at his home with his family and dog Jingles by his side. He was born Sept. 21, 1935, near Bussey to John and Dorcas (White) VerPloeg. He graduated from Albia Community High School, class of 1954.

Floyd married Atha Lu Haywood on Dec. 24, 1955 at the Lovilia United Methodist Church. He worked at Maytag as a machine repair journeyman until his retirement in 1984. He enjoyed fishing, woodworking, metalworking and creating special gifts for family and friends. He was a self-proclaimed jack of all trades — master of none. His greatest enjoyment was spending time with his family and friends, especially his grandchildren and great-grandchildren. He had a special place in his heart for all children.

Floyd is survived by his wife Atha of Lovilia; children Floyd Michael (June) VerPloeg of Oskaloosa, Lugene VerPloeg-Coop of Ankeny, Shelly (David) Price of Moulton, Laura (Russell) Ashby of Centerville, Christine (Marv) Schippers of Oskaloosa and Sherry VerPloeg-Albright of Omaha; 14 grandchildren, eight great-grandchildren; and a brother Lloyd (Betty) VerPloeg of Albia.

He was preceded in death by his parents, sister Patricia Stump and grandson Michael Eugene VerPloeg.

There will be a celebration of life benefit with food and an auction beginning at 5 p.m. on Saturday, Aug. 21 at the Lovilia Community building.

Memorials may be sent to 9 2nd Ave East, Albia Iowa, 52531. Donations will be directed to the Monroe County Hospice and charities for children. Online condolences in memory of Floyd may be made at sinnottpierschbacher.com.

This week the Iowegian wants readers to think about the recent decision by the Centerville Municipal Waterworks Board of Directors to increase the fee for late payment of water bills. In a story published in Wednesday's Ad Express, board members announced a 10 percent late fee after two days late, a $50 red tag fee for accounts unpaid after seven days late and a $25 shut off fee, water service terminated after two weeks late. The board said the decision to increase the fees associated with late payment is to encourage customers to pay their bills on time. So, the question this week is, "Are these fees too much to ask for?"

A. Yes, they are.
B. No, they are not.
C. I'm not affected so I don't care.
