Larry Vorhees

MORAVIA — Larry Vorhees, 72, of Moravia, died Sunday, Jan. 22, 2012 at Mercy Hospital in Des Moines.

Larry was born March 1, 1939 at Marysville, Mo., the son of John Cain Vorhees and Madge Maness Vorhees. He was united in marriage to Barbara Raney Crisp  on Jan. 23, 1996 at Moravia.

He worked for the Norfolk and Western Railroad for 30 years as a signal maintainer. During his career he lived in Moberly, Mo., Gibson City, Ill. and Albia before moving to Moravia. He later worked for the Appanoose County Railroad.

He received his Associates Degree from Indian Hills Community College in Ottumwa in Associates of Science in Arts and Sciences and Associates of Applied Science in Robotics and Automation technolology.

Larry was a very special man, he didn’t drink or smoke and loved playing with his grandkids. He played Santa Claus in the Albia Christmas celebration. In retirement he loved to play on his computer and read, especially science fiction. He was a member of the Marysville Masonic Lodge and The Church of Jesus Christ  of the Latter Day Saints.

He is survived by his wife Barbara; two sons John Charles (Tricia) Vorhees of Sterling, Ill. and Jerimy Cain (Ann) Vorhees of Pleasant Hill; two stepsons David Michael (Mike) Tallent of Cincinnati and Marty (Lisa) Crisp of Seymour; 15 grandchildren; and 14 great-grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by his parents and sister Josephine Doyle.

Funeral services will be held at 10 a.m. today at The Church of Jesus Christ Latter Day Saints (J & K Barn) in Centerville. A visitation was held from 6-8 p.m. Tuesday evening at the Lange Funeral home in Moravia. Burial will be in the Hillcrest Cemetery in Moravia.

A memorial has been established to the Lord’s Cupboard and may be left or mailed to the Lange Funeral Home.
