JD McMain, 84, passed away peacefully at the VA Hospital in Des Moines on Thursday, July 15, 2010 after a courageous seven month battle with lung cancer.
A memorial visitation will be held from 2-5 p.m. Sunday, July 18 at Caldwell-Raddatz Funeral Home, 8201 Hickman Road.
Born Oct. 8, 1925 in Bloomfield, JD graduated from Centerville High School, class of 1943. He then worked at the Ordnance Plant in Ankeny before enlisting in the Air Force, where he served during WWII from 1943 to 1946. After his discharge from service, he worked at the Naval Air Base in Ottumwa. He was united in marriage to Lois Green on Nov. 16, 1946.
He retired in 1985 from Firestone Tire and Rubber after 34 years of service. He was able to make the Honor Flight to Washington, D.C. in October of 2009, and felt blessed to have been able to enjoy the experience. He enjoyed working in the yard, wood working, and was an avid Hawkeye fan.
He is survived by his loving wife of 63 years, Lois McMain; two sons, Randy (Sue) and Greg; daughter, Shari; grandson, Bret (Tania), granddaughter, Amanda (Al); great-grandsons, Branden, and Luke; and great-granddaughters, Kala and Mya. He also leaves a great-great-granddaughter, EmmaJane Sue, who was just born in May. He will be fondly remembered and missed by his family and friends for the many things he did and his guidance in our lives.
A special thank you is extended to all of his caregivers, Dr. Horner, Dr. Colletier, Dr. Elsawy; the nursing staff on 5 South at Mercy Hospital; Hospice nurse, Sue; the Mercy Hospice staff in Johnston; and the nursing staff at CLC A-Ward at the VA Hospital of Des Moines for their care and comfort given to JD.
