Grant Dusablon

CENTERVILLE — Grant L. Dusablon, 76, died on Friday, Dec. 21, 2012 in the Critical Care Unit at Mercy Medical Center-Des Moines following surgery.

Grant was born on Aug. 15, 1936 to Alfred R. Dusablon and Hildegarde C. Meyer in Chicago, Ill. His family moved to his present residence in 1947. He graduated eighth grade from Rathbun School in 1950 and Centerville High School in 1954.

He served his country in the Army’s 4th Infantry, 8th Cavalry, 2nd Recon at Ft. Lewis, Wash. After being discharged in 1961 he was recalled by JFK’s orders during the Berlin Wall Crisis and spent another year in military service.

On May 22, 1963 he married the love of his life, Rosemary A. Guzzi. Born to this union were God’s gift of four special precious children: Melissa, Gregory, Timothy and Allison.

The majority of his employment was with his father in the transportation field with Dusablon Trucking Service, Inc. In the 1980s he did some general contraqcting work for the Army Corps of Engineers at Rathbun Lake.

He was a Walnut Township Trustee and maintained the Elgin and Shaeffer Cemeteries for a period of time. He loved nature and all its inhabitants. He built bird houses and feeders in his spare time.

The first half of Grants life  he was a member of the Lutheran faith and attended the First Evangelical Lutheran Church in Centerville and the second half with the Catholic faith. He had been a member of St. Francis Catholic Church in Mystic  until it closed in July of 1996. He had served on the Parish Council there. He then became a member of St. Mary’s Parish in Centerville. Faith was an important part of his life which showed in his everyday actions.

Grant courageously fought many insurmountable health issues with a sense of humor and hope. During this time music and reading novels became a solace to him.  Life threw him many challenges, but he kept fighting. He will be missed dearly by his wife and children.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Alfred and Hildegarde Dusablon; a sister, Nancy Walker Vonevich and four brothers-in-law, Mickey Walker, Robert Vonevich, Jim Felton and Fred Schnelle. He is survived by his wife Rosemary; children at home; Melissa, Gregory, Timothy and Allison.  A sister, Cherie Felton Schnelle, and two special cousins, Cherie Tait and Sylvia Chenault, in addition to many nieces and nephews.
