CENTERVILLE —
Donald Martin, 96, of Centerville, died Wednesday, Dec. 12, 2012 at Mercy Medical Center in Centerville.
He was born Sept. 11, 1916 in Centerville, the son of Samuel and Effie (True) Martin. Donald received his education in the Centerville schools and graduated from Centerville High School.
After high school Donald enlisted in the United States Army on Dec. 27, 1949. After serving his country faithfully for three years he was honorably discharged in 1952. Donald served as a member of the Appanoose County Draft Board from 1969 through 1974 and received a special citation from President Ford. Donald worked for Iowa Southern Utilities in the accounting department and served as the accounting manager for many years before retiring in 1983.
He enjoyed gardening and golfing, winning the Centerville City Championship a few times at the Appanoose Country Club. Donald was a member of St. Mary’s Catholic Church and was known as a very kind and gentle person.
Donald is survived by his wife, Jennie (Cortesio) Martin of Centerville; his daughter, Judy (Rodney) Kaster of Albia; two grandchildren, Jared (Julie) Kaster and Travis (Amy) Kaster of Albia; five great-grandchildren, Paige Kidney, Olivia Kaster, Avery Kaster, Josiah Kaster and Kael Kaster all of Albia.
Donald was preceded in death by his parents, Samuel and Effie (True) Martin; and two sisters, Mary Wilson and Louise Moll.
Mass of Christian burial will be held at 10:30 a.m. Monday, Dec. 17 at St. Mary’s Catholic Church in Centerville with Father Bill Hubmann officiating. Burial will follow in the Haines Cemetery north of Centervillle. A visitation will be held today at Lange Funeral Home and Crematory from 9-10 a.m.
Memorials have been established to the Donald Martin Memorial Fund and may be given to Lange Funeral Home and Crematory, 1900 S. 18th St., Centerville, Iowa 52544.
