CENTERVILLE —
Mary M. Montgomery, 98, of Centerville, passed away Tuesday, Aug. 28, 2012 at Mercy Medical Center in Centerville.
She was born on June 17, 1914 in Promise City, the daughter of John Albert and Edith Maude (Holliday) Montgomery. Mary grew up in the Wayne County area and graduated from Promise City High School. She later attended business school in Quincy, Ill.
Mary was a dedicated employee for Iowa Southern Utilities in Centerville. She held the position of senior accountant for the company for more than 42 years. In her free time she enjoyed hiking outdoors. In fact, Mary hiked the Lelah Bradley Trail on a daily basis. She simply took pleasure in being outdoors, especially when it involved being around nature and animals. Her passion for animals led Mary to become active in the local Appanoose County Bird Club. Furthermore, she was the secretary treasurer of the club for several years.
Mary also enjoyed the time she was able to spend with family and friends. She was fond of traveling and house sitting for the Dave Taylor Family. She was an active member of the First Methodist Church in Centerville for over 70 years. Mary was preceded in death by her parents. She was the last surviving family member of a family of nine siblings.
Memorial services will be held at 10 a.m. Saturday, Sept. 1 at Lange Funeral Home and Crematory in Centerville Pastor Dennis Gilbert officiating. Inurnment of the cremains will follow at the Promise City Cemetery in Promise City. A memorial has been established to the Appanoose County Conservation Foundation and may be given to Lange Funeral Home, 1900 S. 18thSt., Centerville, Iowa, 52544.
