SEYMOUR —
Roy James “Jim” Stanton was born to Earl Stanton and Naomi Smith Stanton on Oct. 19, 1924 in Savanna, Ill. and passed away at The Good Samaritan Center in Ottumwa on July 6, 2012 at the age of 87 years, eight months and 18 days.
On July 14, 1945, Jim married his wife of 65 years, Dorotha Marie Stoner. Two children, Larry and Marlene, were born to this union.
Jim graduated from Seymour High School in 1944 and served in the United States Army during WWII. Jim and Marie were residents of the Seymour area for more than 80 years. Jim lived in Ottumwa during his final two years.
Jim was a man of great integrity and commitment. He was the ultimate volunteer and community servant. He worked for the Liggett and Randolph Funeral Homes for more than 65 years and was a 65-plus year member of the Seymour Volunteer Fire Department, Masonic Lodge, Eastern Star and American Legion. Jim drove an ambulance, was a First Responder and was always the first one to be called for help of any kind.
Jim was highly committed to his wife and family, never missing sports and school activities of his children and grandchildren. He loved to camp, play cards and joke with people, and he loved teaching his grandchildren to do the same.
Jim was preceded in death by his wife Marie, his mother Naomi Husted and his brother Leonard Stanton.
Survivors include son Larry and his wife Mary of Mt. Vernon, daughter Marlene Sprouse and husband Steve of Ottumwa, grandchildren Beau Sprouse and wife Darcie of Mitchellville, Lucas Stanton of Marietta, Ohio, Caitlin Wyman and husband Curt of Springville, and great-grandsons Grady Sprouse and Landen Wyman.
Also surviving are sisters-in-law Frances Stanton of Augusta, Kansas, Blanche Horne of Casa Grande, Ariz. and niece Connie Lucas and husband Steve of Maricopa, Ariz. Many other family and friend survivors referred to Jim as their mentor, their “Dad” or “Papa Jim.”
Funeral services will be held at 10:30 a.m. Wednesday, July 11 at Randolph Funeral Home in Seymour with Pastor Leroy Perkins officiating.
Friends may call at the Randolph Funeral Home in Seymour after 3 p.m. Tuesday. The family will greet friends from 5-7 p.m.
Interment will be in Southlawn Cemetery in Seymour with military rites performed by Seymour American Legion Post No. 180.
A memorial has been established to Seymour Firefighters.
