Halcyone Streepy

Halcyone Streepy, age 93, of Des Moines died Sunday evening, Dec. 30, 2007 at University Park Nursing Home in Des Moines.

Halcyone was born Dec. 21, 1914, the daughter of Markus and Mary (Ervin) Moriarty in Cincinnati.

She married Arthur Streepy in January of 1937 in Memphis, Mo. He preceded her in death in December of 1990.

After graduating from high school, Halcyone took college training in the education field. She spent 14 years teaching in the Appanoose County area. After retiring from teaching, Halcyone spent almost seven years as a Postmaster in Cincinnati. Along with working, Halcyone stayed busy at home, raising her children and helping Arthur with the chores on their farm northwest of Cincinnati. She enjoyed quilting and reading. Halcyone was a member of the First Christian Church in Cincin­nati. During her time as a member, she was a Sunday school teacher at the church. Halcyone was also a member of PEO and the Rebekah Lodge in Cincinnati.

Halcyone is survived by her two children, Rae (Bob) Streepy and Mike (Paula) Streepy all of Des Moines; five grandchildren, Kara Beery of Des Moines, Denise Streepy of Baxter, James Streepy of Des Moines, Kaleb Streepy-Wheeler of Des Moines and John Matchinsky of Des Moines; seven great-grandchildren; four brothers, Donald Moriarty of Cincinnati, Arley (Bette) Moriarty of Gilroy, Jack (Helen) Moriarty of Sheridan, Wyo., and Larry (Jerri) Moriarty of Gillette, Wyo.; a sister, Mary Smith of State College, Pa.

Halcyone was preceded in death by her parents; her husband Arthur; three brothers, Murl, Wayne, and Max Moriarty; and a sister, Roma Reeves.

Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m., Saturday, Jan. 5, at the First Christian Church in Cincinnati, with Pastor Kay Singley officiating. Burial will follow in the Pleasant Hill Cemetery in Cincinnati.

Visitation will be held today, Friday, with the family present from 6 to 8 p.m. at the Thomas Lange Funeral Home in Centerville.

So, the question this week is, “Will it stay or will it go?” The United States Department of Agriculture in Washington, D.C. wants to close three Farm Service Agency offices in southern Iowa, which includes the FSA office in Centerville, and consolidate the operations in order to save money. Tuesday afternoon a meeting was held at Faith United Methodist Church to allow farmers and other producers who use the Centerville FSA office to make comments about the closing to John R. Whitaker, state executive director Iowa FSA. Many questioned if the meeting Tuesday was necessary because the decision had already been made.

A. Yes, because Washington will listen.
B. No, because the decision to close the Appanoose County FSA office has already been made.
