David Lee Lenz

David Lee Lenz, 59, of Oskaloosa, formerly of Centerville and Oelwein, passed away at his home early Saturday morning, Jan. 12, 2008.

Memorial Services will be held at 10:30 a.m., Wednesday, Jan. 16, at the Garland-Van Arkel-Lang­kamp Funeral Chapel in Oskaloosa with Revs. Kevin Gleasner and Larry Peterson officiating. His body has been cremated and private interment of the ashes will be at a later date.

Visitation will begin at 11 a.m., Tuesday, Jan. 15, at Garland-Van Arkel-Lang­kamp Funeral Chapel; the family will be at the funeral chapel from 6 to 8 p.m. to greet visitors. Memorial contributions may be made in his name.

David Lee Lenz, son of Gail and Betty Swarts Shaffer, was born May 18, 1948 in Waterloo. He was a 1966 graduate of Oelwein High School. He began his working career at United Farm Tool and then at John Deere in Waterloo. He then was employed by Geaters Manufacturing in Independ­ence; he remained there for 20 years. During those years he lived in the Oelwein and Hazelton area. Oct. 21, 1978, he was united in marriage to JoAnn Troupe in Oelwein. In 1998, he and JoAnn moved to Centerville, where he was employed by H & S Auto Shot. He remained there until 2004 when he began working as a machinist at Vermeer Manufacturing in Pella. In 2005, they moved to Oskaloosa. Dave enjoyed hunting and fishing, woodworking and working on computers.

David’s family includes his wife, JoAnn Lenz of Oskaloosa; a son and daughter-in-law, John “Jay” and Victoria Lenz of Ottumwa; three daughters and a son-in-law: Paula Tafolla of Manley, Jodi and Chad Clendenen of Oelwein, and Malinda Lenz of Oskaloosa; eight grandchildren: Joey Lenz, Kanani and Travis Limke, Michael Lenz, Jacob Lenz, McKenzie Lenz, Brianna Lenz, Mason Clen­denen and Madelyn Clen­denen; his father, Gail Shaffer of Oskaloosa; a brother, Chris Shaffer of Des Moines; two sisters and brothers-in-law: Julie and Richard Freel of Ozark, Mo., and Tina and Damion Pinches of Rosebud, Australia; several nieces and nephews; and a great niece and great nephew.

David was preceded in death by his mother, his grandparents, Beatrice and John Swarts and aunt and uncle, Maxine and Ray Pliester.
