Donald Robert (Bob) Curtis, 86, of Centerville passed away Tuesday, July 20, 2010 at his home, after a lengthy illness.
He was born Jan. 2, 1924 in Plano to Mary Belle Fenton and Elmer Ellsworth Curtis. On July 29, 1942, Bob married Mary E. Henderson in Unionville, Mo. To this union six children were born: Larry (deceased) and his wife Cheryl Curtis, Donald Curtis, (deceased) Joan Curtis Chapman, Dennis (Beverly) Curtis; Lynda (Eugene) Zemo and Micheal Curtis.
Including his children Joan, Dennis, Lynda, and Micheal, Bob is survived by his wife Mary Curtis of Centerville; two sisters, Vivian Sharp of Tuscan, Ariz. and Caroline Bills of Des Moines; 13 grandchildren; 16 great-grandchildren; and five great-great-grandchildren.
Bob was preceded in death by his parents; two children, Larry and Donald Curtis; five brothers; two sisters; and three grandchildren.
In July of 1944 Bob enlisted in the United States Army. While serving overseas in Germany, he received a purple heart for his courage and bravery. Upon return to civilian life, Bob served 31 years with the Centerville Police Department. Also, Bob and his wife Mary owned and operated a mobile home park for 22 years. They also owned the Eastgate Auction Barn for 10 years. Bob also enjoyed antiques. In fact, he owned an antique shop for several years. Bob truly treasured the antiques he possessed and thoroughly knew the history behind all of them.
Funeral services with military rites will be held at 1 p.m. Saturday, July 24 at Lange Funeral Home in Centerville with Pastor Ken Mehrhoff officiating. Burial will follow at the Oakland Cemetery in Centerville. A visitation will be held all day Friday at Lange Funeral Home with the family present from 5-7 p.m. that evening.
