MOULTON —
Donald Eugene Newland, 93, of Moulton, died Monday, Aug. 13, 2012, at the Continental at St. Joseph in Centerville. He was born the son of Eugene D. and Amy Quintilla (Davis) Newland on March 17, 1919 in Moulton. He graduated from the Moulton High School in 1938.
After graduation, he worked at the Iowa Ordinance Plant in Middletown, which is near Burlington. Donald and Marietta Stevenson eloped in Unionville, Mo. on May 30, 1942 and were married in the Christian Church by her cousin, the Rev. George Swan. Donald was drafted into the United States Army on Oct. 19, 1942, where he became a sharp shooter. He was discharged on Jan. 30, 1946 at Fort Sheridan, Ill. Don would work his farm near Moulton and also work at Garrett Chevrolet dealership in Bloomfield in the Parts Department. Later, he would work for Carmer's Chevrolet in Centerville. After retiring, Don and Marietta would begin traveling extensively. They saw most of the 50 states, including Hawaii and a cruise to Alaska. He also was the handyman at the Moulton United Methodist Church for many years. He was a member of the Moulton Christian Church, loved singing in a recreational Barbershop Quartet, he was a member of the Masonic Sincerity Lodge No. 317 and Chapter No. 156 Order of the Eastern Star both in Moulton. He was also a member of the AmVets in Centerville and Burl McClure American Legion Post in Moulton. He was a member of the Centerville Shrine Club and a Moulton Rainbow Dad. He served four years as a member of the Moulton City Council and was the President of the Moulton Historical Society for many years. He was preceded in death by: his parents; his wife, Marietta Newland on Dec. 25, 2002; and a sister.
Donald is survived by: his sons, Larry Newland and his wife, Linda of Stilwell, Kan. and Lyndon Newland and his wife, Amy of Pueblo, Colo.; a brother, Bob Newland of Burlington; grandsons, Todd and his wife, Jenn Newland of Cary, N.C. and Dustin Rae with the US Navy; also great-grandsons, Matt and Nicholas Newland of Cary, N.C. as well as a double cousin, Ralph "Toby" Davis of Keokuk.
Funeral services will be held on Thursday, Aug. 16, 2012 at 1 p.m. at the Schmidt Family Funeral Home in Moulton with the Rev. Reg Higginbottom officiating. Burial with full military honors by American Legion of Moulton will be at the Sunset View Cemetery north of Moulton following the services. Public visitation will be held on Wednesday, Aug. 15 from 2-8 p.m. at the Schmidt Family Funeral Home in Moulton.
