Shirley Cardani

CENTERVILLE — Shirley Cardani,  82, of Centerville, passed away Monday, Dec. 3, 2012 at Mercy Hospital in Des Moines.

She was the youngest of seven children born to Clyde and Elpha (Johnson) Hayes. Shirley was raised her entire life in Centerville and grew up on South Main Street. She attended school in Centerville, graduating from Centerville High School in 1947. While in high school, Shirley was active in basketball as a member of the 1944-1947 Redette basketball team. She was also a member of the National Honor Society and was active in a female government committee for the state of Iowa. During high school, Shirley began dating the love of her life, Joe. During this time, she was employed at Iowa Southern Utilities. Upon graduation, Shirley and Joe were married on Jan. 3, 1948 at the St. Mary’s Rectory in Centerville. Following a family reception at Shirley’s parents’ home, they took a train to Kansas City, Mo. to begin their life together. Shirley held various jobs while following Joe’s many moves with his career. Shirley and Joe lived in Kansas City until March of 1948. They then transferred to Davenport, Council Bluffs, Hobbs, N.M. and then back home to Centerville to establish their own convenience store. While Joe tended to the daily business at the store, Shirley worked daily, seven days a week, behind the scenes in the home office. She established the bookkeeping system that remains in place today. Shirley was meticulous and extremely detailed in her ability to manage the finances. She continued to manage the home office and worked in the office until the time of her death. With her intelligence and Joe’s business savvy, they were able to build the Quick Shop Superette into the successful business you see today at Quick Shop Foods.

During Joe and Shirley’s 64 year marriage, they welcomed into their life five children, Kathy, Debbie, Julie, Linda and Michael. Shirley was a devoted wife, mother and grandmother. In her role of wife, Joe was known to state that he may be the boss but Shirley wore the pants. Shirley supported Joe through ups and downs and served as the tie that would bind the family together, often lending a peace keeping role, as Joe could be very hard headed. Her love and devotion to Joe would become ever so evident following his stroke in April. During the last seven months of Joe’s life, Shirley would only leave his side one day per week to attend to the business for the store. Shirley was a loving mother who always put her children before her own needs or wants. While she suffered many losses in her life, she maintained strength of character and class that is to be admired. As a grandmother and great-grandmother, Shirley would continue to nurture as she had her own children. She deeply loved and cared for each of her grandchildren and held a special place in her heart for them all.

Shirley enjoyed dancing with Joe at Charlie’s, Pale Moon and the Green Circle. She enjoyed taking her family on weekend trips to Des Moines and each summer to Branson, Mo.; attending music and variety shows. She enjoyed camping during the summer as well. Shirley had a zest for shopping and a sharp eye for fashion. She enjoyed going to the mall and would shop away while Joe would wait for her ever so patiently. Shirley enjoyed maintaining a well decorated home and took pride in what she and Joe had accomplished together. She enjoyed sunbathing and maintaining the outside of her home, as she despised fallen leaves. Shirley enjoyed watching sports on television and was an avid Iowa Hawkeye fan. She was a lifetime Elvis Presley and George Strait fan, attending several concerts of each.

She is survived by her children, Debbie (Cardani) McConville and Michael Cardani (Misty Rosenberg); Dwight Pfannebecker; grandchildren, Becky McConville, Sarah McConville (Robert Raskie), Kaysie Pfannebecker, Kylon Cardani and Bryce Cardani; three great-grandchildren, Cody Zaputil, Zoe Melvin and Emma McConville; a brother, Jack Hayes of Colorado; and two special nephews, Tom Long of Florida and Sam Long of Des Moines.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Joe Cardani; daughters, Kathy, Julie and Linda Cardani; her parents; five siblings, Mary Long, Virginia Hayes, Eva Hayes, Billy Hayes and Robert Hayes; and a nephew, Jerry Long.

Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 10:30 a.m. Saturday, Dec. 8 at St. Mary’s Catholic Church in Centerville with Father Bill Hubmann officiating. Burial will follow in the Oakland Cemetery in Centerville. A visitation will be held today at Lange Funeral Home and Crematory from 9 a.m.- 8 p.m. with the family present from 5-8 p.m. A Rosary will be held on today at Lange Funeral Home and Crematory at 4:45 p.m.

A memorial has been established to the Joe and Shirley Cardani College Scholarship Fund and may be given to Lange Funeral Home, 1900 S. 18th St., Centerville, Iowa, 52544.

Condolences may be shared online at www.langefh.com.

A luncheon will follow the committal service at St. Mary’s Catholic Church in Centerville.
